Another Mother's Kate Edwards discusses her Networking resolutions.
New year, fresh start, and I’ve been trying to get out of my comfort zone - starting with NETWORKING!
I like my own company and can become somewhat of a recluse but I have also recognised that day in, day out, sat in front of my screens, is probably not the best of habits.
Being a business owner can also be quite lonely, even if, like me, you have a fab Co-Founder on the end of the phone. Getting out and about has helped me quash that isolation and get fresh perspectives from like-minded professionals. Besides, who doesn’t like meeting new friendly faces while being plied with tea and biccies?
Recent networking through Filter Free Business and Gedling Borough Council has really helped with my confidence:
I've expanded my comfort zone: I’ve found that when putting myself out there and interacting with new people, I'm forced to step out of the ‘ordinary’, the ‘safe’. I’m not a particularly shy person; I can talk to anyone, but I’m a bit out of practice. I’m certainly finding that the more I network, the easier it becomes to approach others in various settings, which makes me feel more confident in social and professional environments. I have to remind myself also how far we’ve come - we’re TEN YEARS OLD this year - and I should feel confident about the success we’ve achieved.
I've learned new communication skills. Every conversation I have is an opportunity to hone my communication skills: how to introduce myself, how to talk about what we do, making sure that it is clear but concise. Networking has helped me refine my "elevator pitch".
I've benefitted from positive reinforcement: I wish I didn’t need positive reinforcement but the affirmation I require is REAL. I’ve found that networking often leads to positive feedback, whether it’s a compliment on my skills, advice that helps us grow, or even new opportunities. These small wins build my self-esteem and reinforce my belief in my own abilities.
I've gained different perspectives: By meeting people from different backgrounds and industries, I’ve been exposed to different ways of thinking and seeing things. For sure, this has broadened my perspective and helped me to embrace my strengths and weaknesses by discussing them with others - ultimately, it has helped me gain confidence in what I AM good at.
I've built a support system: Last but not least, I have met a wonderful group of people - connecting with those who offer guidance and engagement. This support network makes me feel secure in knowing that someone else has ‘got my back’, someone else is cheering me on, and I genuinely look forward to meeting up with them once a month.
Networking can feel daunting, but once you start, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Where to find Networking Opportunities near you
Over the years, I’ve discovered that the best connections often come from a mix of online research and in-person interactions. Here’s how I go about it:
1. Tap into Online Platforms
Eventbrite & Meetup – These are goldmines for local business events, networking mixers, and industry meetups.
LinkedIn Events – Many professionals host or promote events here—just search by location!
Facebook & LinkedIn Groups – Join local business groups and keep an eye on upcoming meetups.
2. Leverage Local Business Hubs
Chambers of Commerce/Local council – They regularly host networking breakfasts and mixers.
Coworking Spaces – Many offer networking nights, even if you’re not a member.
BNI & Referral Groups – If you like structured networking, these are worth checking out.
3. Be Open to Casual Networking
Some of my best connections started with a simple, “What do you do?” at:
Coffee shops
Community events
Even the gym!
Networking is everywhere—you just have to start the conversation!
